Apprenticeship Training

The JATC's goal is to provide the highest quality training to those interested in a career in the various fields within the electrical industry.

In addition to receiving skill training on the job, our apprentices are provided trade related classroom training that produces competency and pride that lead to true craftsmanship. Quite often some local training committees provide special classes with hands-on training to support classroom lectures and discussions.

The Apprenticeship Program of Local 5 in Pittsburgh consists of 10,000 hrs. of on the job training and 2000 hrs of classroom related instrucion. During the 5 years of apprenticeship you also will be required to take 24 college credits through CCAC of Allegheny County. You will be assigned these credits through our college co-ordinator that works for the J.A.T.C. All of this training and college related instruction are provided for our apprentices free. It payed for out of the funds made available through the J.A.T.C.

All of this training is conducted at our new state of the art training center located on the Southside of the city of Pittburgh at 5 Hot Metal St. We have 42,000 sq.ft. of training space. The space consists of 10 classrooms and 6 labs with a library and student break area. The labs address hands on training in these areas: Motor Control, Fire Alarm, PLC, Tele-Data, Pipe Bending, Computers, Physics, and a certified B.I.C.S.I. Lab. We also do extensive safety training in the areas of Confined Space, Scaffolding,CPR-First Aid with DeFib,Lock Out/Tag Out,HazCom,and OSHA 10&30.

The first 3 yrs. of apprenticeship classes are conducted during the day,for example you would work 4 days on the job receiving your on the job training and one day in the classroom but you would be paid for the full week. This schedule will continue in yrs. 1-3 . In your 4th and 5th yrs. you would attend classes 2 nights a week or one Saturday.

Your pay is based on the guidelines of the collective bargaining agreement between Local 5 and the Western Penna. Chapter of N.E.C.A.You will receive pay raises every 6 months based on you progress in the classroom and on the job.

You will be assigned your work and classroom schedule by one of the two Training Directors Robert Gieder and Paul Reinert. They also will be responsible for checking your progress on the job and in school.

This is a great oppurtunity for a person that wishes to go into a career that offers the best of both worlds. You will be learning a trade that you can work at an be paid a liveable salary with great benefits, and at the same time taking college credits that will also assist you in your life time so that you can maintain that standard of living.

Their are no costs associated with this program other than a one time fee of $25 that is an application processing fee. At the end of your 5 yrs of apprenticeship you have no student loans to pay back and you have been making money the whole time you have been in school.

Again all of this is provided by the J.A.T.C. which is a joint Committee made up of Union and Management members. These members set the programs that the apprentices will be expected to complete so that they will be the best trained Electrical workers that the Industry has too offer.
